The NOTET is a musical collective organized by guitarist Andrew Green, featuring alto saxophonist Jeremy Udden, trombonist JC Sanford and bassist Jorge Roeder. The group ethos is reflected in the name: no drums, no arrangements, no planning, no rehearsals, no clichés, no edits. Spontaneous and unplanned, ears open and willing and able to adapt at a moment’s notice, the players consistently bring fresh ideas to familiar material, and bring collective improvisation to the forefront.
Jeremy Udden “gifted alto saxophonist and composer with the gorgeous tone (JAZZTIMES) has found a voice within a variety of projects, including PLAINVILLE (DOWNBEAT, 4 stars), “one of the year’s most slyly inviting jazz albums” (NY TIMES), and on over 20 recordings as a sideman. Udden has performed with Bob Brookmeyer, Steve Lacy, Gunther Schuller, and many others. Andrew Green has played with Donald Byrd, Billy Hart, Joanne Brackeen, Marion Cowings, Mat Maneri, John McNeil, Matt Wilson, and Danny Mixon. Andrew’s highly acclaimed CD, Narrow Margin was chosen a top 10 CD for 2010 by Cadence Magazine reviewer’s poll. He is also the author of three best-selling guitar books. Jorge Roeder has performed with Gary Burton, Alex Acuña, Geoffrey Keezer, Steve Lacy, Antonio Sanchez, Kenny Werner and Matt Wilson. He was awarded 1st prize at the 2007 International Society of Bassists Jazz Competition. Current projects, include the Grammy-nominated Julian Lage Group, Victor Prieto Trio, and Ryan Keberle’s Catharsis. Recognized as a “Rising Star” trombonist, arranger, and big band in DownBeat Magazine’s 2017 Critic’s Poll, JC Sanford, has performed alongside Danilo Pérez, Matt Wilson, Bill Stewart, and Donny McCaslin. JC also well known for conducting the twice-Grammy-nominated John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, and the Alice Coltrane Orchestra featuring Ravi Coltrane and Jack DeJohnette. His 2014 JC Sanford Orchestra album Views from the Inside won international acclaim
The session features three well known standards, Stella By Starlight, Body and Soul, and the Dietz,Schwarz composition Alone Together. In other, less capable hands, such familiar material might come across as pedestrian, but the level of group interplay is at it’s highest on these tracks, and they definitely sound fresh and unclichéd. The Benny Golson chestnut Along Came Betty is taken at ballad tempo, allowing the unusual harmonic structure to really have space to breathe, and the vibe the group creates is thick and dreamlike.
